Team Sports (5th-8th)
Interscholastic sports each season for all students in 5th-8th Grades is yet another form of collaboration, challenge, and healthy discovery of strengths and weaknesses. Sports is mandatory from 3:00-4:20 Monday through Thursday, far exceeding state mandates for physical education. The program exposes all students to the unique combination of social interaction, life lessons, and exercise gained through sports.
For each sport, there is a 5th & 6th Grade team and a 7th & 8th Grade team. Students elect one sport each season.
In 5th & 6th Grades, basic skills, principles, and positioning are prioritized. Game schedules at this level are deliberately sparse, keeping the emphasis on practice and team dynamics.
GVS sports teach: 1) personal responsibility within a team; 2) sportsmanship in nuanced contexts; and 3) the excitement of interscholastic competition. In 7th and 8th Grades, students apply their skills and game awareness in a higher level of competition. Coaches teach what it takes to win— and what can be learned from a graceful loss. More advanced strategic approaches are introduced in preparation for any level of high school athletics.
Nearly all team coaches are Green Vale faculty from other departments. This adds to school spirit, cohesiveness, and inter-disciplinary familiarity with students.
