Hearts Broken in Newtown
On behalf of The Green Vale School community, we join the nation in sharing the grief and heartbreak brought to bear on the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who lost loved ones, and with a school community so deeply wounded.
This tragedy certainly raises anxiety and questions about safety and security, the primary concern and responsibility for families and for schools. Green Vale consistently reviews its safety and security procedures, works closely with the Old Brookville police and fire departments, has security cameras focused on all entrances, and employs two full-time security guards who are retired police officers. In light of this horrific event, we will conduct a systematic review of all safety protocols and implement appropriate changes to maintain our joyful and protected learning environment.
There will be differing degrees of awareness of this event among children. As with all conversations around complex and difficult topics, use your good judgment regarding their questions, and do provide age appropriate responses. As always, the goal is to reinforce a sense of love and protection. For more helpful reading on this please click to view what was shared by Westport (CT) Public Schools this past weekend.
School directors and I are available for any questions or counsel. It is times such as these when we recognize the reality of our collective vulnerability, as well as the critical importance of living in a secure and safe environment, one filled with love and hope.
