Calendar Changes + Hurricane Response

November 14, 2012

Dear Green Vale Families,

Although most in our School have regained power, few have regained a sense of stability or normalcy. Hurricane Sandy swept through our region, leaving in its path altered exterior and interior landscapes and the emotional debris of heightened stress. My heart goes out to those in our School and regional communities who have suffered dramatic changes.  I also want to acknowledge those who supported Green Vale families as well as their own families and neighbors by providing shelter, assistance, and expressions of concern.

In terms of positive rebuilding and responding, here are three ways Green Vale will move forward.

  1. In times of crisis there is a need, an instinct to help. We are all connected. What connects us is the spirit of generosity. Green Vale will centralize its effort to support others by collecting requested items for distribution by Island Harvest, The Salvation Army, SCO Family Services and North Shore Sheltering Program. Students will be given grade-specific lists of goods to bring to school. On Friday, November 30th the School will extend the day for K-9 until 3 p.m. During the “Kids Connect” portion of the day students and faculty will partner to pack donated items for distribution, write cards of greeting and support and enjoy a few recreational activities. This desire and even the obligation to help at this time of crisis are not only presently necessary, but also central aspects of our mission to promote responsibility and citizenship. (Information to follow)
  2. As you will read in a letter from our Fair Chairs, this year’s event schedule has been altered. The Vendor Fair will take place on November 29 and 30, and our Dinner and Auction on Friday, January 25. I want to underscore the importance of this community event and encourage your support. Let me acknowledge all the hard work, flexibility and sensitivity that so many volunteers are demonstrating.
  3. Because of the number of days missed, School will be in session on the following days:

    November 12,   December 20, December 21, February 15 & April 1

If we have several snow days this winter, the scheduled Professional Day on April 29th will become a regular school day. Much thought has gone into these additions, and the School understands that there are numerous points of view on which days to add or alter. We are sensitive to both the desire to maintain our academic integrity as well as to understand your prior travel commitments, but believe this schedule is the best solution. Please attempt to work with this calendar. I do not foresee any other changes at this point.

The strength and high expectations of our community remain intact. In fact I believe now is the time to intensify our efforts to value and to reinforce the School’s mission, culture and communication.   Please contact me with any questions, concerns or ideas.

This Thanksgiving may you feast on the warmth of family and friends, the abundance of all that is before you and the appreciation for what is truly nourishing.

Sincerely,

Stephen H. Watters
